Annual Report Design – King Island, Tasmania
King Island Council
A Case Study
In 2020, the council embarked on a redesign project for its annual report, with the goal of improving the document’s readability, accessibility, and visual appeal.
The King Island Council is a local government body responsible for the administration of the King Island community in Tasmania, Australia. The council produces an annual report every year to communicate its achievements, goals, and financial status to its constituents.
I worked closely with council to understand their goals and requirements for the report. Having already worked with council on their branding and visual identity design, I was guided by this to achieve a communication style that ensured the design aligned with the council’s values and messaging.
I began by creating a new layout for the report, incorporating brand fonts, clear headings and subheadings, and a consistent colour scheme. I also designed custom infographics, charts, and tables to visually communicate the council’s financial data and performance metrics. I was fortunate to have access to a large collection of amazing photography, which has been featured throughout the report to showcase the King Island landscape and people.
To ensure that the report was accessible to all members of the community, I applied contrasting colours and high-contrast text, as well as incorporating visual cues to guide readers through the document. The report was available in both digital and print formats, with the print version using eco-friendly materials.
The King Island Council annual report was delivered on time and within budget, and was well-received by both the council and the local King Island community. It has demonstrated the value of thoughtful design, that prioritises accessibility and clear communication to the community.
